Repair the airport runway so we can stay "above the fog, beyond the smog" on the rugged California coast.

Ocean Ridge Airport is a small public use airport on the rugged California coast.

It is threatened with public closure if runway repairs are not done by 9/30/2014.

The owner (a non-pilot!) has always funded the airport but is unable to afford these repairs.

We're raising funds to repair the asphalt runway to keep it open to the public.

Ocean Ridge Airport is located in Gualala, California. It is a rural coastal town on the Pacific Ocean, about a 4 hour drive north of San Francisco (but less than an hour flight).

The airport was built in the early 1960s by a private developer, intended to serve a fly-in golf resort. When that plan fell through, it was sold at auction to the current owner. Since the 1970s the current owner has kept the airport open to the public with his own funds...and he's not even a pilot himself!

The airport serves a community of resident pilots, tourists, and the emergency medical helicopter operators that serve this rural area.

The California Department of Transportation is requiring repairs to the asphalt runway by September 30, 2014. If the repairs are not completed in time, then the airport will lose its public permit.

With the rising cost of fuel and petroleum products (including asphalt),** the owner is no longer able to fully support the airport**.

A group of local pilots and interested individuals has formed a group called Ocean Ridge Airport Association (ORAA) with the goal of keeping the airport open to the public and raising the funds necessary to do the repair work.

Estimates for the work are around $60,000. Fundraising so far has brought in $15,000. We're hoping this Small Knot campaign will help us reach our funding goal so we can get the repairs done before the deadline.

Beyond that, ORAA has been working to promote the airport on aviation and tourism websites, improve infrastructure and revenue streams, and develop some amenities for visiting pilots (courtesy car, campsite, airport day, etc.).
