Co-Owner Carl Foster: I was fat, lol. I’d reached 218 pounds on my 5’ 9” frame. I’d gained the weight while working as an auditor; a position with a great deal of travel which led to on the road eating at fast food stops. In 2009, I’d reached my breaking point and wanted desperately to get healthy. I was introduced to the benefits of pressed juices through a great friend. After I started shedding pounds while making my own juices, making better eating choices, and through moderate exercise; my friends started asking me to make juices for them. Juice Hugger was born.

The company grew quite organically after that. I started researching, talking to nutritionists and personal trainers and taking classes on nutrition and cooking. It became my life mission to help people, like myself, gain access to more healthy beverage choices & health related information. Today, I weigh in at 168 pounds.

I have known my business partner (& fiancee), Kelly Keelo, for over 20 years. When I told her about my idea to start a pressed juice company she loved the idea & came on board to handle all of our social media & branding initiatives. That was over 3 years ago. After selling our juices at festivals & farmer's markets, we transitioned to our own cafe space last year - selling beverages, juice cleanses & healthy foods for the health conscious as well as the vegetarian or vegan.

Most companies like ours are in upscale neighborhoods. I believe we are one of the first to take pressed bottled juices to the lower to middle class community. Our goal is to create quality products at a reasonable cost for the “everyman” who is often exposed to higher rates of Type 2 Diabetes and other food related illnesses due to poor eating choices increased by lack of healthy food options in the community. The limited access to health related education & the overwhelming amount of high fat food choices in urban neighborhoods is staggering.

Why We're on Smallknot

We need your help to upgrade our cafe. Juice Hugger was financed entirely by ourselves with the help of friends & family. Most of our initial finances went into the essentials. Although we like our quaint space, we would love to make it more inviting for our healthy outreach initiatives & the general expansion of our business.

We would like to buy a TV so that we can offer viewings of health related documentaries & sports in the evenings as well as play health & wellness related shows during the day - like Dr. Oz & The Doctors. We need to take out our large tables & replace them with smaller tables to make additional seating. Our goal is to create more of a lounge vibe that will be comfortable for our guests whether here for lunch/dinner, a workshop, game nights, or simply to use their computer for work or play.

We also need additional equipment for our kitchen so that we can offer catering to area businesses. A second freezer & refrigerator as well as the repair of our 2nd oven would help us expand our offerings, which will grow our business. Your pledge would also be used for general upgrades like the replacement of one of our windows which is badly scratched.
